Ford's Theatre began as a house of entertainment. President Abraham Lincoln frequented the establishment seeing many plays here. On the evening of April 14, 1865, just five short days after General Robert E. Lee's surrender to General Ulysesses S. Grant, the President was shot in the head.
Today, the National Park Service keeps open the site of this fateful night. With a free, but ticketed system, visitors are allowed to come in and visit this theatre.
Also here, the Ford's Theatre Society produces several live performance shows each year.
