There is nothing remaining of the church of 1285 and very little of the building which replaced it in 1318. This church was built by Abbot Robert Champeaux (1285-1324. For centuries, the history and life of the church were interwoven with the life and work of the Benedictine Abbey of Our Lady and St Rumon. The remaining ruins of which lay immediately to the south of the present church.
There are records of building work during 1352 and further work in 1380. The Clothworkers Guild Aisle was added around 1442. The building which graces the centre of Tavistock date from the 16th century. The church underwent a general restoration and reseating in 1844-5.
The church has a fine 19th century collection of stained glass windows. Inside the church is a fine monument to John Fitz(1590) with his wife and son. There is also a monument to John Glanville(1600).
