The Gate of Honour for Gonville and Caius College is along an obscure lane, Senate House passage. The six vertical sundials date from 1963. They are beautiful sundials, simple, precise, and elegant. The east, south east, south west and west dial faces are visible from Senate House Passage. The north west and north east dials are best seen from Caius Court.

The dials were part of a series of restorations done to hark the 400th anniversary of the founding of the college by Dr. Caius in 1557. The designers were Dr. Frank Powell, Junior Burser at the time and Dr. P.J. Message, fellow and Astronomer. The dial faces are bronze, painted with vitreous enamel.

These sundials replace an original set of sundials inscribed in the stone of the gate, likely by Theodore Haveus of Cleves about 1575. Only traces of the original could be seen when the restoration was undertaken in 1958-59.

My reference to these and other dials is "Cambridge Sundials" by Alexis Brookes and Margaret Stanier available form the British Sundial Society.
Sundial Type: Vertical - Wall mounted dial plate
