For many years prior to the arrival of the Mormon Pioneers in the Salt Lake valley, other rugged individualists had routinely visited or occupied the area in small numbers. Mostly alone, sometimes in small groups, they explored the area, tried to maintain peaceful relations with the Native Americans who lived there, and plied their trade in furs or other goods. Their experience and knowledge of the area were of great assistance to the new settlers.
