The Heliotrope Trail is one of the most scenic hikes on Mt Baker. This hike offers easy access to the trailhead and a varied walk bringing you to the Coleman Glacier and the climbers alpine route to the summit.

There are many scenic hikes on Mt. Baker. One of the best is the Heliotrope Trail. This offers easy access, an 8 mile drive on Forest Road 39, mostly paved to the parking lot at the trail head. The trail is varied, an easy walk in mature coastal forest, challenging creek crossings, a hump up a moraine on the climbers access route and amazing scenic views of the Mt. Baker summit and the Coleman Glacier. If you are prepared for difficult stream crossings you can get right to the seracs of the Colman Glacier. As we did not bring appropriate footwear for the difficult creek crossing, we climbed above the creek and joined the climbers access route to their base camp at the foot of the glacier. This is a spectacular hike.
The distance was 5.5 miles round trip with an elevation gain of 2340 ft. We took our time and enjoyed a 5 hour hike.
This is the view of Mt. Baker we see from our home town, Sidney, BC, 100 km away across the Salish Sea. We caught the first ferry at 7 am, crossed the border at 10:30 and started hiking at 11:35, finishing at 4:30 pm, in time to get home that evening. It was a great hike.
