Opened in 1965 in the grounds of New Plymouth's Brooklands Park, this small zoo is a favourite with families and their small children.
The zoo is open 9am to 5pm every day, except Christmas Day, and is accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs. There is a playground, large sun shade, toilets and picnic tables. Along with the swings is an inclusive swing for the disabled and wheelchair bound visitors.
A favourite with visitors is the capuchin and cotton-top tamarin monkey "exhibits" and the family of ring-tailed lemurs. The oriental small-clawed otters are sometimes hiding, but also really cute. Adults and kids will enjoy the selection of colourful birds housed inside the walk-through free-flight aviary.
There is also the "Farm Yard", a favourite with the children, featuring kunekune pigs, alpacas, chickens, guinea pigs, goats and a donkey.
Group booking visits and zoo keeper talks are available.
Dogs and other pets are specifically banned from the grounds, although registered guide dogs are permitted, but not in the free-flight enclosure.
