ARA Birs was built in 2007 for CHF 50 mio. It replaces the older facilities Birs 1 in Reinach (built 1964) and Birs 2 in Birsfelden (1977). It handles the wastewater produced in the lower Canton Basel-Land, an area of 80,000 inhabitants.

The fermentation gas is used to create electrical energy and heat for the neighborhood.
