In Hingham, off Route 3A, is a relatively new 10-acre farm known as the Weir River Farm. This farm is a working livestock farm that is part of the Trustees of Reservations network of conservation properties. The Trustees of Reservations will keep the land as open upland grassland surrounded by woods. This type of habitat is fast disappearing in Massachusetts as this is usually prime land for development. Two other Trustees of Reservation properties border the farm: Turkey Hill and Whitney and Thayer Woods, making a combined property that is more than 5,000 acres in size.
The property was originally an estate occupied by the painter Polly Thayer Starr, who had paintings in Boston, Philadelphia, and New York. In 1999, she donated the property to the Trustees of Reservations.
The according to the farmfresh.org web site, they sell eggs, pork and beef products, as well as icelandic wool. They also have indicated that they will be starting a vegetable garden.
The waymark is not at the entrance to the farm, but to the best parking location for the public for the farm, which is on Turkey Hill Lane. What you might consider the front entrance is off MA Route 228, near the intersection with MA Route 3A. From the parking lot, you walk on a trail by the cow pasture to a junction, where you can either walk straight to the entrance to the livestock pens, when open, or left through a fenced pathway and gates through the pasture where the horses graze. At the time, the livestock area was not open to the public. Once you walk through the pasture (close all gates behind you), you enter a manicured woodsy area where you might see a pig in a penned in area. From there is the back entrance to the farm. If you continue down the road, and take all right turns, you will come to a dirt road off the farm driveway, with stone statues of camels on either side. The Weir River is also nearby.
While walking about I saw the horses gallop in from the pastures to the livestock barn. I also saw the pig being fed by the farm family and had a nice conversation with them.
You can also see them at the Hingham Farmers Market.
