Chicago Municipal Airport was dedicated in December, 1927 and began operation in 1928. It was located on a one mile square property, originally owned by the Chicago Board of Education.
In 1949, the airport was renamed Chicago Midway Airport in honor of World War II's Battle of Midway. The airport serviced a peak of 10,000,000 passengers in 1959, but was unable to handle higher loads. In 1961 after new Chicago O'Hare airport opened, passenger traffic dropped by 60%. In 1967 reconstruction added three new concourse with 28 gates. In 1982, the City of Chicago purchased Midway Airport from the Chicago Board of Education for $16 million.
Today, Southwest Airlines is the dominant carrier operating out of Midway Airport.
