In the center of Canton, on Church Street, between downtown and the Canton Viaduct, is the building that is home to Blue Hill Lodge, A.F. & A.M.
This building is a squarish, white clapboard building with two floors. There are several features that outline arched windows that have since been boarded up. There is a square feature rising above the peaked roof that hints that either a steeple or bell tower was there. The door is a modern glass door set in an arched doorway. There are a few square pane windows on the second floor.
Blue Hill Lodge was first formed in 1863, and met in the office of the Kinsley Iron and Machine Company on Revere Street (factoid: Paul Revere's copper sheeting company was located next to this company). The lodge received full status in 1864. In 1869, the lodge rented a hall on Church Street, opposite a Baptist church. In 1923, the lodge wanted a building of their own, so plans were drawn to build a lodge in the downtown section of town, but those plans fell through. In 1930, the Baptist church property was available, but negotiations fell through. But, in 1937, the church was available again, and the lodge purchased the building and remain there today. In the 1950s, the steeple was removed for safety.
The lodge meets on every first Tuesday, except for July and August.
The lodge has a couple long term monument projects going on. The first is a memorial to masons near the Canton Viaduct. The second is a memorial to stone masons. Both are in the early stages of implementation.
Church Street is a one-way street from Washington Street (downtown Canton) to Neponset Street by the Canton viaduct in Canton Junction.
