A newly sculptured four foot tall bronze statue of Lady Justice stands atop a restored cast iron fountain that was dedicated to the legal community of Bexar County in December 2008. This Lady Justice is a nearly universal symbol of the legal system, fairness and justice. The sculpture is a nude woman, that in Greek mythology such bareness and naturalness represented purity, goodness and justice; who is blindfolded, representing impartiality; holds the scales of justice in one hand, representing that each side of a legal case is carefully weighed; and a sword in her other hand, representing the enforcement of the law. The sculpture also includes the Lady Justice standing on a globe of the world, representing Mother Earth, and has a ribbon blowing up from her shoulders, representing the sky, which in mythology represents the home of the gods. The body of the lady is a dark brown bronze color, but the accents of the blindfold, scales of justice, and sword are burnished brightly to appear golden by contrast. The sculpture was created by a San Antonio local artist, Gilbert Barrera, son of a well known local lawyer. Mr. Barrera was commissioned to restore the fountain and to create the Lady Justice in 2003 as part of a major renovation of the Main Plaza area in downtown San Antonio, TX. The statue and its associated fountain were dedicated on December 7, 2008 by Tracy Wolff, wife of Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff.
