The film Brief Encounter (1945) is one of the great British romantic film classics. Produced by David Lean, the film captures the tentative steps of two middle class individuals, played by Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard, towards an extra marital love affair. A large part of the action takes part in a railway station (shot at Carnforth). The couple meet by accident in the railway waiting room and the affair slowly begins over several further weeks, with the railway station always part of the scenery. Later scenes, however, shift to the countryside, in particular the bridge scene set in the Langdale valley.

In the intervening years since 1945 the flora around the bridge has grown. The right hand side of the bridge is partially obscured in summer by the foliage, however a good shot of a visitor standing on the left of the bridge may still be had. The best vantage point to take a photo from is Old Dungeon Ghyll bridge at N54 26.664 W003 06.182, which is a hundred yards or so downstream.
