This tablet commemorates the ending of the Great Fire of Boston, and is located on the southwest corner of the McCormack Federal Building, at the northeast corner of Milk and Devonshire Streets.

The tablet reads: "This tablet placed here by the Bostonian Society commemorates the Great Fire of November 9-10 - 1872, which beginning at the south-easterly corner of Summer and Kingston Streets extended over an area of sixty areas, destroyed within the business centre of the city property to the value of more than sixty million dollars, and was arrested in its north-easterly progress at this point. The mutilated stones of this building also record that event." The plaque is also dated June 1, 1893.

Underneath the plaque, carved into the building, is a note mentioning that the plaque has been relocated, reading: "Stone and tablet from former Post Office building. Reset July 11, 1933." (Note: That transcription may be faulty, as the image was not perfectly legible in this regard. Any corrections would be welcome.)

When logging a Massachusetts Historic Marker, we ask that you not only describe your visit, but to upload a picture from it. But a photo of you standing next to the marker or a photograph the subject of the marker - those are examples of possible photographs to upload.
