The original planing mill was built in 1840 by William Eakin. Robert Harrington leased it from him in 1872, later purchasing it in 1881. In operation for some 140 years, it supplied lumber, sash, doors, frames and other carpentry to barns, houses, schools and churches in the area. In 1978 the mill was severely damaged - in 1983 it was destroyed by fire.
The site was redeveloped and re-opened in May 1987 and is now home to a variety of specialty stores, boutiques and a restaurant.
The waterwheel itself is located on the NE corner of the mill.
