There are two Penny Presses at Whipsnade Zoo, one by the Zoo Shop just inside the main entrance, and the other, the one shown here, at the entrance to the railway behind the railway shop. The smashed item is an British new penny and the cost of smashing is £1.
Both give the choice of four different smashed designs, but the four designs are the same on each machine. They are:-
Penguin, Sealion, Brown bear, and Ring-tailed lemur.
The co-ordinates of the zoo entrance machine are:-
N 51º 50.983 W 00º 32.661
A notice on the machines written so as to reassure the public that what they are about to do is not illegal says:-
Coins can be legally pressed following the Forgery and Counterfeiting Act of 1981.
and:-
This replaced the offence of defacing current coins made in the 1936 Coinage Offences Act.
Further reference to this can be found in Defacing/Destroying British currency
