Sandusky County retained the original 1844 courthouse as a north wing (right side) when it became necessary to increase its size during the 1930s. Compatable central and southern sections were added to the original building using Works Progress Administration (WPA) funds. The original octagonal cupola, with its small circular copper dome, was transfered to the center of the expanded building. The original six wooden columns were replaced with eighteen elongated fluted Doric sandstone columns. The wide portico is encompassed by a wooden entabliture.
