The Kenai River Flats at the mouth the Kenai River are noted for the large numbers of snow geese that visit the flats during their migration in the spring. During mid-April it is there will be thousands of snow geese visiting this area each day. Also the area is known as a calving area for the local caribou which occurs in early May to early June. Caribou can be sited in the area at other times of the year also. Other birds seen in the area include Canada geese and sandhill cranes.
