Ayutthaya (pronounced: "R-U-T-R") is one of the central provinces of Thailand, and lies ~100kms north of Bangkok. It is a major tourist attraction due to its prominence as a former capital of Thailand, which is now a UNESCO world heritage site.
While the town has a measure of importance, regrettably, it does not possess a fully fledged bus station, rather, there is an area in the town, just off the Naresuan main road, next to the Chao Phrom Market, where buses park along a side street. The reason for this lack is that Ayutthaya is part of the greater Bangkok urban sprawl. Buses from this 'bus station' travel principally to the three major Bangkok bus stations, and some (not all) of the immediately surrounding provinces, and to destinations inside the province. Bangkok dominates, people travel from Ayutthaya to Bangkok, and then elsewhere, obviating the need for a proper, local, bus station, however, this locale is referred to as the Ayutthaya bus station (locally as the Chao Phrom Market bus station) in the tourist websites.
At around midday on a week day, at this bus station, there were several dozen local buses (converted trucks), and perhaps a half dozen large buses, parked, plus the usual assortment of tuk-tuks and motor bike drivers. Food and tickets are sold around the station area.
Waymark made at the intersection with the main Naresuan Rd.
