Meridians markers, a north and a south, were used to provide a true north/south line as a calibration standard by which surveyors could observe the magnetic declination and adjust their surveys accordingly. The north meridian for Craven County has been lost or destroyed but the south meridian remains and is a 6 x 6 x 48 inch granite monument projecting about 4 inches above the ground inscribed with 'NCGS + USCS 1898'.
The meridian is situated in Cedar Grove Cemetery in the NE quadrant of the intersection of two driveways. The marker is east of the intersection of George St and Main St and west of a maintenance building on the cemetery grounds. To reach from Tryon Palace proceed north on George St to cemetery on the right.
