An information card near this cannon reads:

French M1897 75 mm Gun and Caisson
1917

Known as the French 75, this gun revolutionized artillery as the first rapid-fire field gun. The most exceptional feature was the French 75's long recoil system, which eliminated the need to re-position or relay the gun between rounds, the first such gun in history. Other features included fixed ammunition, an independent line of sight and a quick-firing Nordenfelt breech, which gave an amazing maximum rate of fire of 24 rounds per minute. The French supplied over 1,800 gunds to the U.S. Army while U.S. factories prepared to begin production. A number of guns along with French instructors came to Fort Sill to train U.S. artillerymen in the use of the gun.

Weight: 1,160 lbs.
Gun length: 107 inches
Elevation: -10 to +19 degrees
Traverse: 6 degrees
Shell: High explosive 12 lbs & Shrapnel 16 lbs.
Muzzle Velocity: 529 feet per second
Maximum Range: 8,500 yards

Admission is free, and access to Fort Sill can be done through the visitor's gate. At you first stop, you can get a map of important sites on the base. Be sure to go to plan additional time to go to the Indian Cemeteries. There you will find the graves of different Indian Tribes, including Geranimo. There are many sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places, from the old fort, cemeteries, and aviation related locations. Fort Sill can easily be a place to visit for a couple hours, or for the entire day.
