The welcome sign features the memorial clock tower, an icon of Waipawa, seen on the main road as you pass through the town.
Waipawa is the second-largest town in Central Hawke's Bay and holds the distinction of being Aotearoa's oldest inland European settlement.
Waipawa was founded on the banks of the Waipawa River by runholder Frederick Abbott in 1860. The town, originally named Abbottsford, was located next to a ford in the river. Settlers preferred its Maori name, Waipawa.
