Froomefield or Talfourds as it was more commonly called was laid out in 1836 by the two English brothers Froome and Field Talfourd. In 1846 it was described as having about 40 inhabitants , a neat Episcopal Church and an excellent windmill. One-third acre village lots were selling for 10 pounds.

The industrialization of Froomefield (now Froomfield) started in 1906 when a dock and pipeline were built to supply imported crude oil to the Canadian Oil Company refinery in Petrolia. Eventually in 1950 Canadian Oil decided to shut down the Petrolia Refinery and build a new one at Froomfield. Canadian Oil was bought by Shell in 1963 and Froomfield is now dominated by the Shell refinery and dock although two cemeteries and a few houses remain.
