The discovery of gold, silver, lead and copper, as well as the only trade route from Fort Benton, led to the establishment of this American Indain Wars-era military camp. The garrison also provided many of the troops who were involved with the Indian campaigns in Western Montana, including the Nez Perce War of 1877.
In 1878 the post was renamed Fort Logan, after Captain William Logan who was killed by the Nez Perce Indians in the Battle of the Big Hole on 9 August, 1877. The post remained active and garrisoned until 1880.
Today, the only remnants of this early era post are a deteriorating adobe storehouse, two officers' quarters building, and the original blockhouse, which lie 20 miles west of White Sulphur Springs, MT.
