Mountford John Byrde Baddeley would have witnessed the birth of the railway as a mass transit network. Also the birth of the internal combustion engine and the motor car.
At first his guide books described itineraries using trains and bicycles, with height profiles of the route for cyclists. Latterly they included advice for the motorist. The change in transport is covered throughout the life of his books.

The headstone inscription reads.
"These stones from the summit of Scafell Pike mark the resting place of Mountford John Byrde Baddeley
Born March 6 1843 Died Nov 19 1906
Millicent S Baddeley
His Beloved wife 7 June 1938
Age 92 years"
