Much to the displeasure of the community, Fountain was featured on the Today Show by Travel Commentator Peter Greenberg. The general feeling was that Greenberg "trashed " the town by jokingly hurling cheap shots at it. In reality, it is just a nice little town.
The famous sinkholes are caused when the earth's weight causes underground limestone caverns to collapse. This is fairly common in the southern corner of the state.
Fountain is also the trail head to the 42.3 mile Root River State Trail, which is used year around for biking, hiking and cross country skiing.
