Lucas Samaras, born in 1936 in Greece, was trained at Rutgers and Columbia universities. His work encompassed painting, sculpture, photography, and performance art.
The medium is described as "Patinated bronze", which I originally incorrectly thought was to be painted bronze. "Patinated" refers to "a thin layer formed by corrosion on the surface of some metals and minerals, especially the green layer that covers copper and bronze and is valued for its color."
