In Boston, in the East Boston section of the city, is the Suffolk Downs racetrack. At the clubhouse entrance to the track is a plaza and a memorial right by the door for Seabiscuit, a great race horse that was first 'discovered' at this location.
The text on the sign is as follows:
"Seabiscuit
On June 29, 1936 at Suffolk Downs, trainer Tom Smith first discovered the horse that he would transform into a national hero. Seabiscuit won an allowance race that day and, upon Smith's recommendation, the three-year-old colt was purchased by businessman Charles Howard at Saratoga in August of that year. Seabiscuit blossomed into a superhorse, conquering handicap and stakes competition at racetracks across the country while captivating the American public. Seabiscuit ran at Suffolk Downs eight times in his 89-race career, winning the 1937 Massachusetts Handicap with Jockey Red Pollard. Seabiscuit first raced at Suffolk Downs on July 15, 1935, just five days after the track opened."
There is a movie, "Seabiscuit," (2003) about the horse's career.
