This fountain depicts an Aztec woman sitting with her legs crossed with a water jug in her lap. Water flows out of the jug as well as from spouts located below the sculpture. The artist, Donal Hord (1902-1966) , was a San Diego artist. Another of his works, Guardian of the Water (WM7E5W) adorns the entrance to San Diego's historic County Administrative Building.
Hord was originally from Seattle where he developed an interest in Mexico while bedridden with rheumatic fever. His family moved to San Diego for his health when he was 13 years old and already a budding sculptor. In 1934, he got a job with the Federal Arts Project which funded artworks in public schools, libraries and other public areas.
