Sir Lionel Lyde (1724-91) commissioned the design of the Church of St Lawrence and its linked urn mausolea from Nicholas Revett around 1778-9. The church resembles a Greek temple and was revolutionary for its time. Controversially St Lawrence Old church was partially demolished by Sir Lionel to improve the view from his house.
The idea of placing mausolea in the colonnades of the church is unique. The urns, which are raised on tall plinths and sheltered by aedicules. The urns were originally inscribed, but the lettering is now illegible.
Sir Lionel is alleged to have said of having his wife’s mausoleum being at the other end of the colonnade that ‘since the Church united us in life, she can make amends by separating us in death’.
