Historical Date: 11/11/1940 Description: Graveyard of Ships (Summary)- The 20 mile span of Lake Michigan that has earned the reputation as the 'Graveyard of Ships'. From 1848 - Veterans Day 1940, nearly 70 ships have have gone down in this stretch of waters. Veteran's Day Storm (Summary) - The most disastrous day in Lake Michigan shipping history occurred on Armistice Day 1940. A raging storm destroyed 3 ships and claimed the lives of 59 seaman. 2 Freighters sank with all hands lost, and a 3rd ran aground resulting in a 3 day rescue attempt that was hampered by severe weather.
