A bustling town of 1800 people in the late 1800s, with a school, stable, churches, stores, the town met its demise with the Silver crash of 1893. The last ore from the mines was hauled in 1918.

Little remains of the original town: a school building, a couple of residential cabins.

This location is also the half-way and turn-around point of the famous Leadville 100 running race.
