Very little remains of the original chapel at this site. Aisles and a tower have been added until we see the size today. St Mary's was consecrated in 1856.
The oldest part of St Mary's is built from slate rubble. The additions still use slate which is faced. The window surrounds are typical Victorian sandstone, wearing away faster than the local slate. Both the North and South porches have their doors surrounds from sandstone. The roof is typical Lakeland slate. The west end was restored in 1881 by Paley and Austin, architects.
During August each year St Mary's is a venue for Lake District Summer Music.
In the 1950s there was a music school nearby in Windermere.
In 1988 St Mary's had an extensive fire, leading to a complete internal restoration.
