The statue for Capt Otway Burns Jr. stands near a public fishing area just off the White Oak River and is not far from the building that is located in the Historic District on Front Street where he built the first steamship made in NC, the Prometheus. In 1836, President Andrew Jackson, himself a hero of the War of 1812, appointed Burns keeper of the Brant Shoals Light-House at Portsmouth.
