This bronze statue sits on a pink granite pedestal. It was commissioned by Hastings Corporation from the sculptor Francis John Williamson (1833 - 1920). It was unveiled in 1903 and is located on the seafront of St. Leonards in front of the Warrior Square Gardens, looking out to sea.
During the Second World War, the statue was damaged by a stray bullet from an enemy aircraft, and the resulting bullet hole can still be seen in the right knee area today.
