A favorite resort stop - Burnside Expedition
Camps for Confederate troops early in the war became a Union base and headquarters in March 1862 as Northern troops advanced on Fort Macon from New Bern. The Confederate troops burned all that they thought was useful to the North. Abandoned after the activity, Carolina City became part of Morehead City.

 Driving Directions: From the northern Outer Banks, use NC 12 to the Cedar Island-Ocracoke ferry. Ferry to Cedar Island where NC 12 joins US 70 W to Morehead City/Atlantic Beach/Beaufort.
From the west, use I-40 to US 70 E to Morehead City/Atlantic Beach/Beaufort.
