Construction on the Cathedral commenced in 1858 and was not fully completed until the final spires were erected in 1937.
Pope John Paul II gave an address to the clergy here in 1986.
The cathedral has taken a number of different forms over the years. The first was a much smaller timber residence. The second being a smaller building on the site before in 1851 William Wilkinson Wardell arrived from England.
A devout catholic and renowned architect Wardell soon laid plans for a cathedral not before seen in the countries of England and Ireland.
It is still the largest church in the world to be built in the 19th century as a single entity.
It is approx 103m (340ft) in length, 25m (84ft) in width.
