This church is the last remnants of one of the oldest African-Canadian settlements in Upper Canada (now known as Ontario). The community was founded shortly after the War of 1812 by former members of the Loyalist militia.
Between 1830 and 1850 by approximately 24 negro families who fled from slavery in the United States settled near here in Oro, and in 1949 they aquired this property; they established this Church and cemetery.
There are several plaques here, posted by the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada, and Simcoe County Tourist and Industrial Committee. The Church continues to be used today.
