Attached to the outside of the wrought iron railings of the Bourchier Chapel in Little Easton Church is a bronze memorial to the actress Dame Ellen Terry.

Dame Ellen regularly visited Little Easton, sometimes staying at nearby Easton Lodge, and worshipped at Little Easton Church. She often performed in Lady Warwick’s Theatre.

The bronze was sculpted by Sir Arthur Gilbert in the art nouveau style. Sir Arthur is most famous for his sculpture of Eros in Piccadilly Circus. The plaque is inscribed with the words

IN MEMORY OF
DAME
ELLEN TERRY
1848-1928

Dame Ellen Alice Terry was an English stage actress born into a theatrical family. By 1874 she was the leading Shakespearian actress in London. She went into partnership with Henry Irving and became successful in both England and the USA.

During her career she forged many friendships with artists and literary figures, in particular George Bernard Shaw. In 1906 a gala performance celebrating her work was put on at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. Her career spanned the transition between theatre and film. She appeared in several films between 1917 and 1922. She became a Dame Grand Cross of the British Empire in 1925.
