The six-foot statue is of an older brother carrying his younger brother on his back. It is mounted on three-foot green marble platform inscribed with the Girls and Boys Town motto "He ain't heavy, Father ... he's m' brother." It also has the following inscription, "Dedicated to helping all youth realize their full potential for God, self, and society." It is in the middle of a round-a-bout in front of the Hall of History museum.
According to wikimapia, the inspiration for one of Girls and Boys Town's most famous symbols came from a drawing Father Flanagan saw in a 1941 "Ideals" magazine. Father wrote to the magazine and received permission to use the drawing of an older brother carrying his younger brother on his back.
In 1977 Italian sculptor Enzo Plazzotta was commissioned to create a modern version of the statue. From his clay model, five bronze castings were made at the Mariani foundry in Piestrasanta, Italy.
Three of the statues are located on the Girls and Boys Town campus and one at the Boys Town National Research Hospital.
