In the gardens of Easton Lodge there is a memorial tree lined walk, called the Stirling Walk, that has been created to commemorate the RAF crews who were stationed here during World War 2. At the head of the walk a stone memorial has been erected.

The memorial is in the form of a stone obelisk topped with a ball finial. On one side of the plinth there is a metal plaque bearing the inscription

TO
THE MEMORY OF ALL THOSE WHO SERVED AND LOST THEIR LIVES
ON
190 AND 620 SQUADRONS DURING WWII

ONE OF THEIR FINAL OPERATIONS “OPERATION VARSITY” WAS FROM
THE AIRFIELD LOCATED ON THIS SITE, TO ASSIST IN THE DROPPING
OF AIRBORNE TROOPS TO CROSS THE RHINE AT VESEL ON
24TH MARCH 1945
IN THE FINAL ASSAULT THAT LED TO THE END OF HOSTILITIES.

In October 1944, Great Dunmow airfield, adjacent to Easton Lodge, was transferred to the RAF as a base for No. 38 Group RAF. Two Stirling squadrons, Nos. 190 and 620, arrived on the 14th of the month. These squadrons took part in Operation Varsity, the British airborne assault across the Rhine.
