Veynes is a railroad junction town in the French alps. In 1885 rail service was initiated with a line from Grenoble to Veynes. This was augmented by a line from Briancon and the connection with the PLM, The Paris-Lyon-Merediterranée railroad. These routes are all through significant mountains and involve high gradients, curves, tunnels and bridges, slow speed but great scenery.
The mural at a main road junction in downtown Veynes was painted in 2005 to commemorate 80 years of the PLM railroad. The line remains in operation but traffic is light. The high speed TGV Paris-Lyon-Marseille takes the most of the passenger traffic to the south of France. The rail junction remains an important aspect for the town of Veynes. This is captured in the mural.
This is a large mural on staging on the side of an old four story building in the centre of Veynes. The person in the foreground and the streetscape to the left shows how the mural dominates this square.
