Originally two monumental towers of Bernini was to stand on either side of Basilica. These towers were never executed above the line of the facade because it was discovered that the ground was not sufficiently stable to bear the weight. Instead, Giuseppe Valadier designed two clocks from 1786-1790 on both side of front facade.
The one on the right showing "European mean time"(?)are about half an hour behind the right time. The wrong time on the clock may also be an attempt to keep the Devil guessing about "the day and the hour." The front facade with the clocks was completed under Pope Pius VI (he decided not to erect the planned tower) and just on the both clocks one can find "his signature", i.e. his heraldic symbols - three stars and plants of lilies.
