The Carowinds Carousel
Philidelphia Toboggan Company #67

The Carowinds Carousel was crafted by master carver John Zalar of The Philidelphia Toboggan Company in Germantown, Pennsylvania in 1923. Zalar's characteristic style captured a bold and daring spirit with facial expressions, sleek muscular legs, elegant flowing manes and decorative saddle blankets.

The Carowinds Carousel was originally at Pleasure Park in Evansville, Indiana, where it entertained the young and old alike from 1923 to 1936. It was moved to Mesker Park, also in Evansville, where it operated from 1936 to 1973. Taft Broadcasting Company purchased the carousel in 1973, and following a major restoration, the company relocated it here in 1979.

A new milestone in the history of The Carowinds Carousel was created on October 11, 1995, then this hand-crafted treasure was dedicated to the children of North and South Carolina in honor of Nelson Schwab III.

As the lead horse (renaimed in Nelson;s honor) guides the others on the carousel, Nelson masterfully guided Carowind's parent companies, Taft Attrctons, Kings Entertainment Company and Paramount Parks, as chairman and chief executive officer from 1980 to 1995.

His insightful and courageous leadership, extraordinary vision, commitment to quality and compassion for associates and guests alike provided the foundation for the park's success in the past and will continue to provide inspiration for making our dreams a reality in the future.
