The historical district is spread out over 3690 acres to include 56 buildings and 3 structures (Indian mounds).
Cowee was the principal diplomatic and commercial center of the 18th century Middle Town Cherokees, while West's Mill was established in the early 20th century with settles working in the area's farms, mines, and forests.
The coordinates are for a set of information signs in the center of the district. Active preservation effort is underway supported by the NRHP registration.
