This artificial cave entrance go into a small man-made cave that was originally created in the 1880s at San Pedro Springs Park as a "summer house" to keep food cold. Keep in mind, in the 1880s there was no modern refrigeration like we have now. There is a flow of water coming down the outside walls that are covered in ferns and various grasses and an occasional sapling tree. The evaporative cooling keeps the inside cool while causing the outside to grow with calcium deposits and vegetation.
