This is a very difficult piece to describe. My impression of the piece is that of a tall column with an assortment of abstract accents on the top, all in a bunched-up shape. From a distance, it almost looks like a flame, with the tall base and pointed bulb.
This piece is one of several in the courtyard by the Museum of Art and the Drama Dept. Some are abstracts, others are figurative. One is a collection of abstract dedicated chairs. All of these pieces are a great outdoor collection for visitors to the museum to come look at.
The Smithsonian Art database gives a good description of this sculpture:
Abstract sculpture resembling a column with a nest on top. The artist wrote that the sculpture represents a phoenix bird feeding a nest of small birds, which are surrounded by flames resembling flowers. The sculpture sits on a concrete base, which in turn sits in the middle of a former pool now filled with sand and rocks.
