Lava Beds National Monument preserves more than 300 lava tubes found in the park. Visitors can explore many of these caves. Rental flashlights and hard hats are available in the visitors center for a nominal fee.
The monument is also the site of the Modoc Indian war of 1872-73. Under the leadership of Kintpuash (Captain Jack), Modoc Indians used their knowledge of the landscape to hold off US military forces numbering ten times their strength for 5 months until their water supply was cut off by the military.
Visitors Center is open from 8 AM to 6 PM in the summertime, with shorter hours during the fall, winter and spring. The center is open every day of the year with the exception of Christmas Day.
