Ibrox is the home of Glasgow Rangers FC. The stadium is magnificent and would indeed be a daunting ground for any visiting team to play at. Over the years many thousands of fans have come here to see the beautiful game. Sadly there have been three disasters here and this memorial remembers those who lost their lives in them.

5th April 1902.

During an international match between Scotland and England, a newly built stand, The Tribune Stand, collapsed and many supporters fell 40 feet onto the ground below. It is thought that heavy rain the previous night was to blame for the steel and wood structure's failure. 517 people were injured and 25 lost their lives.

The collapse happened just after half-time but the decision was made to play the game to a conclusion in order to avoid fans leaving all together and encumbering rescue workers.

16th September 1961.

Two people were crushed on a stairway. There were other incidents around this time also, where other fans were injured and a great deal of money was spent in order to improve the safety at the ground.

2nd January 1979.

Games between Rangers and their Glasgow rivals Celtic are always very highly charged events and this game ended in a 1-1 draw after two goals being scored in the last few minutes of the game. It was only as the fans were leaving the stadium, that the barriers on one of the stairways collapsed with tragic results. There were reports of bodies being piled 6 feet deep. Over 200 people were injured and 66 people lost their lives.

The names of the dead from all three of these events are recorded on the memorial. If you visit this waymark, please take a moment to remember these people.

The statue on the memorial is John Greig, the captain of Rangers on the day of the 1971 disaster.
