Chicago was primarily a city of wooden structures in 1871. That year was particularly dry and fires were breaking out often. The Great Fire lasted over a period of 3 days and destroyed most of the central area of the city. Over 300 people died. Undaunted, the survivors began rebuilding immediately and successfully hosted a World's Fair just 22 years later.
I was surprised to see this artifact while on a tour of this old cemetery. It reminds me of another similar one I waymarked on the north side:
