The Blockhouse was built to protect the north access to New York during the War of 1812 and never needed because the British invaded Connecticut instead.
The walk to the Blockhouse is through one of the most isolated and rough grounds in Central Park. Care must be taken when visiting the sight, but the hike is well worth the effort.
